Transforming Houses into Homes

Design at Home works to reward families that have broken the cycle of public housing and purchased their first home. Annually Design At Home works with the Chicago Housing Authority and CHAC to identify a deserving family. Then Design at Home works with Harrington College of Design Interior Design interns to provide a redesign of one of the family's rooms. The receiving family is then able to create a deeper sense of ownership in their new home.

Completed Projects:

Marcia is a single mother with one beautiful young daughter. Marcia worked very hard to move out of Cabrini Green and purchase her first home. This basement redesign has helped Marcia to feel at home even though she is far from her family members and friends who still live in Cabrini Green.

Daisy and her son Joel relax on a Saturday morning after a busy week of work and school. Daisy is a single mother of three boys in addition to raising her niece and nephew. This large family of 6 is excited to be one of Design at Home's first families and asked Design at Home to create a boys bedroom & lounge area in their unfinished basement.

Olive and husband Robert maintain a busy household, juggling work, volunteering at local schools and raising 2 grandchildren. Olives extended family and friends often gather in their home for stories and soul cookin'. The heart of Olive's home is her kitchen and this is the space her family has chosen for Design at Home to transform.
